Finding new ways to make the most of the South West’s defining feature, grassland, was one of the key takeaway points for farmers at the first-ever Rootstock conference, held in Devon last week.

Around 200 people descended on Westpoint Exeter on Friday (February 3) for the Devon County Agricultural Association’s (DCAA) newest agricultural event – complimenting the flagship Devon County Show in May and Agrifest South West in November.

Farming: Co-op finds ways to make farming greener

A co-operative that sells food to local families could help form a template to make farming in Wales greener.

Tyddyn Teg, near Caernarfon, in Gwynedd, grows organic veg for the community and tries to be environmentally friendly.

It does not use pesticides, which it says helps biodiversity to thrive.

Most farmers to adopt nature friendly practices ‘on 15% of land by 2030’

Defra has announced a five-year delivery plan to improve the the environment, which includes incentivising most farmers to adopt nature-friendly practices on at least 10 to 15% of their land by 2030.

The government has today published its Environmental Improvement Plan 2023, which includes actions to “halt and then reverse the decline in nature”.

Cattle prices ended 2022 on historic highs

Cattle prices ended 2022 on historic highs, with prices peaking at 448.1p/kg, the highest on record, according to new AHDB analysis.

In the four weeks to 31 December, average prices for all prime cattle were slightly above the previous period at 442.6p/kg.

In the final week of the period, and year, prices reached 448.1p/kg, which is the highest on record, the levy board says.

Overall steer prices slightly increased on those seen in November, up 0.7p (0.1%), and ranged between 442.4p and 448.9p during the period.

New Bobcat telehandler to fit tight spaces

No change in this year’s Basic Payment Scheme rates

The Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) entitlement rates for 2022 will remain the same as last year, the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) has confirmed.

For this year, BPS payment rates for England are set in Sterling, and they will be the same rates as 2021.

Farm businesses to have energy bills halved as part of new scheme

The government has unveiled new much-needed support for farming and rural businesses facing surging energy bills this winter.

Through a new Energy Bill Relief Scheme announced today, the government will provide a discount on wholesale gas and electricity prices for all UK businesses.

It means bills will be cut by around half their expected level this winter, with support applying to fixed contracts agreed on or after 1 April 2022, as well as to deemed, variable and flexible tariffs and contracts.

Harvest 2022 in closing stages in most regions of Britain

This year’s harvest is now in the closing stages in most regions of Britain, with 95% of it completed according to the latest data.

This pace exceeds the five-year average of 69% complete by this point in the season (week 7), AHDB’s report says.
